First home - getting more and more confused

#1 Post by kampmanfan4life »

Hello,

Last year I purchased my first home. A 1950's ranch in Wisconsin. Our 3 bedrooms have 5 windows which are all original single pane. We are in the process of getting quotes for these windows and getting more and more confused. We hope to stay in the house many year, but never know.

The two quotes we got for 5 white vinyl sliding bedroom windows.

1) Zen Windows - 5 classic Soft-Lite Sliding windows $3,750

2) Weather Pro Exteriors (I believe a local company) - 5 Seaway Gold Signature series - Replacement = $6,610 or New Construction is $7,650.

The guy for Pro Exteriors was very helpful. He recommended that we get new construction as one window had some rot.

Any help or suggestions are welcome. What should we consider? Our main concern is Zen Windows seems too cheap.

Where in Wisconsin. Too cheap is certainly a "Red Flag" that should raise your antennae.

Some window rot doesn't necessitate a new construction application in the vast majority of applications.

Milwaukee area. It is a small ranch, with not great attic or wall insulation. Hard to tell how much money we should put in.

Best bet...use a window vendor that actually knows and understands energy. Only guy I would recommend in Milwaukee is HomeSealed.

Keep looking.

Zen is a gimmick that won't be around much longer imo, and you are right to question that price. Cheap price typcially = cheap product + cheap labor, neither of which meet your goal of a good experience with this purchase, especiually if staying in your home for a while.

The other guys have pricing in line with the norm, the window is a little better than average, and the company seemed to have a decent history until you hit some recent news. Looks like the owner is indicted for fraud. Maybe not a safe choice.

As WoW said, HomeSealed really is by far the best choice for homeowners in the Milwaukee area. They have outstanding products and their customer service is second to none.
