SoftLite single hung?

#1 Post by WHITE GAS »

Does anyone know if SoftLite manufactures a single hung vinyl window? If so, in which series?

The bigger question is why would you want a single hung?

Don't require an operable upper sash. Why would i want an operable upper sash that i would never move?
Reside in a single story ranch. Outside window cleaning happens probably twice a year. Don't even require a ladder.
Half height screen vs full screen.
Single hung cost vs double hung. Less weather stripping and hardware used on single hung equals reduced cost to manufacture.

Those are just the first several reasons that come to mind. So, why answer an honest question with a question unless you know the answer?

I am not sure. Where is the home located (region wise). Some offerings are regional.

Many companies stopped making single hungs simply because no one wants them and they serve no purpose.

I believe they have one call the Barrington Limited.
Best bet is taking to a Soft-Lite dealer.

While your situation (i.e. rambler with easy access) certainly lends itself to being a single hung candidate, most of the better products are concentrated in the more popular operator style (i.e. Double hungs). No real benefit to you with cleaning, but "maybe" some serviceability down the road?

Not sure. You'll have to make that determination. While you'd expect their to be a bigger price delta, last time I priced out the comparison, I was shocked at the lack of offset between the two.

The reason NOT to buy single hungs: They exist to be a lower cost alternative. Its very rare to find a good one for that reason, since they are made to save a penny here and a penny there.
