Double hung windows not closing all the way

#1 Post by daniel_fl »

I have several new double hung windows all with the same behavior. When unlocked, if I push up on the top sash, it pulls up on the bottom one. And vice-versa when I push down on the lower sash. Not a lot, maybe just 1-2mm.

I am concerned the window is not sealed because of this. Is it expected? Or something that can be fixed by me or the contractor who installed it, or a manufacturing defect, etc

Thanks

More likely that the interlock, if so equipped, it binding vs. marrying properly.

Can you take a picture or show us what the window looks like? How old are these units?

Best guess is an issue with the interlock or the headjamb where the sash goes into the pocket. What brand window is that?

Call your installer back. Less than a year old, should be an easy adjustment.

Are you able to lock the window without using added force? If so, that is probably normal movement, most vinyl windows will have that.

If you aren't able to lock it because of this, then I'd agree with WoW, it sounds like the interlock is getting hung up. Typically if you put som pressure inward on the meeting rail while pushing the sashes fully closed it will get into place. Then keep it closed and locked for at least a few days, the vinyl will "remember" where it is supposed to sit.

That said, based on the fact that you are saying "several" are like this, there may be something else going on here.

Thanks WoW and HomeSealed,

I am able to lock them all smoothly, without force. Until this week most of them were untouched since installation so maybe it is a "memory" issue. The brand is Simonton - Storm Breaker III. I posted a couple months ago about sound mitigation (which is still awful, even for the single-hung ones). Same windows.

Will try closing while applying inward pressure to the meeting rail, and also give it some time to "remember". Then call the installer if it persists.

Thanks. That Stormbreaker is a hefty looking SOB. Glad you got them buttoned up.
