Differences between Alside Preservation and Sheffield ??

Posted At: 2004-08-15 18:43:26

It appears they.....for all intents and purposes.....share the same basic construction, with the following feature differences:

1) The triple-glazed/krypton IG option is NOT available on Sheffield

2) Preservation uses Super Spacer, Sheffield has Intercept

3) Preservation adds the capture feature to the traditional sloped sill, Sheffield is sloped ONLY

4) Preservation utilizes a solid fiberglass sash reinforcement, Sheffield has conventional steel reinforcement

5) Preservation adds insulating foam, Sheffield has no foam in it's frame

6) Preservation has a double lifetime warranty; I don't think Sheffield's standard Alside warranty has the full transferability feature

On balance, the primary reasons to choose Preservation are the upgraded IG package and spacer.....which I'd think is a persuasive reason to do so. The other features appear to be more sizzle than steak.

While I don't know the price differential between the two lines, I'd guess comparably spec'd Preservations and Sheffields would be relatively cost-comparable. However, I'd think a slight premium for Preservation.....even with comparable IG packs.....might be worth it due to the compelling advantages Super Spacer brings over Intercept. However, why ANYONE would actually buy Preservation with the base double glazed/argon IG, frankly, is a mystery to me.

What I don't understand is why Preservation wouldn't meet Sheffield's air inflitration specs. Unless the capture feature on the sill makes a difference.....and just I can't see how THAT would be the reason.....it makes no sense to me.

Depending upon where you live, you can get the triple glaze with krypton fillin the Sheffield. Preservation also has 1" glass and a block and tackle balancer, not available in the Sheffield.
If you can get them side by side you'll also see the preservation has shadow groove weld cut's and in general a cleaner looking window. The cost difference to the dealer is about $50.00. Your right about the air test, it should be about the same, but isn't. When I get some time I'll find out why.

Thanks to you, windowmann

After little success in establishing a relationship with my alternate Schuco dealer here in Cincinnati, I signed a contract yesterday to have 14 Preservations installed in my home. I'm not sure I'd have learned about Preservation without your messages over the past few months, and I wanted to thank you for your input.

Everything being equal, I probably would have preferred Schuco. But I feel pretty satisfied that Preservation is solidly among the industry's true premium vinyl replacement offerings. Add to that the fact the local dealer stepped up to the plate with what I consider to be an EXCELLENT price (a full 10% below Schuco), and it became a reasonably easy decision.

Thanks again !!!

Well your welcome, but I didn't mean to necessarily get you to buy Preservation's, but if the price is right it's a very good window. I'm still looking for what I consider to be the best replacement window made and that Fen Ex is very persuasive about Shuco, but I'm still looking.
I'm more about value, and can only reccomend something if I honestly believe it's worth the buck.

There are a few differences between Preservation and Sheffield. As mentioned, SST, 4 to 1 block and tackle balances, fiberglass reinforcements, polyu foam, a true welded capture sill. Sheffield has a snapped on slope sill. This is cheaper to manufacture and is not very strong. Water can get under the thing piece of plastic and freeze and because the sill is snapped on and not welded it can flex, bow, or warp, which will affect water drainage. The warranties are not the same, both are transferable but the Sheffield has many provisions. It cost to transfer, and it only has a 10yr seal failure warranty, afterwards all is prorated. The Preservation is NOT prorated and is bumper to bumper. It also has a foam compression bulb at the interlock which is keeps out bugs, air, noise, etc. The hardware is nicer. It also comes with more decorative glass options. I have heard that there are VERY few service calls on Preservation unlike other Alside units. (ie, Sheffield) There is usually a price difference between the two because one has more quality control and higher manufacturing costs associated with it.
