Subject: | 44x45" replacements? |

I have an older house with a set of six windows on the front, top three 44x45 and the bottom set 38x45 (tallxwide). All are single pane vintage 1950s. Two are awning windows and four are fixed. I would like to replace them and optimally retain the all-wood look on the inside. I got a quote from my local Andersen by Design dealer for ~$1200 per window, wood veneer inside we could stain and white outside. Does this $ sound ridiculous to anyone else? Would replacing the windows with all wood be just as pricey, and what type of contractor could I call to even get a price? Should I just give up and get white vinyl replacements so I can send my daughter to college?
Thanks ahead of time for all of the help!
PS, anyone hear about System Boreal windows? I found a post ~1 week ago which recommended them), but would like more info.

Cincinnati-based Gilkey uses the System Boreal design; I'm not sure who else in the US does. If you've not yet done so, check out PH tech's website for more info.......
While I'm just a consumer.....and not an expert.....I didn't see a frame design from ANYONE that appeared to exceed the general mass and overall strength of this product. Gilkey makes a big deal of SB meeting the Dade County spec, which is much the exception than the rule in vinyl windows. I believe that Schuco and Preservation also meet.....or are VERY close to meeting.....this same spec.
If your exposure to System Boreal in fact IS through Gilkey, I think they're a pretty safe choice. In the final analysis, I probably would have chosen them over Alside Preservation for my project had they not tried so hard to sell me on Heat Mirror over triple glazing.

wvuguy-
Thanks for the info. There is a Boreal 'manufacturer' in my town (Lafayette, IN) called Best Window and Door Co. very nice people, too. I went to visit their showroom, and since I"m new to replacements I wanted to see 'em in person. I was thinking of replacing a fairly large pic window w/ two double hungs with a glider window, looks like I"ll call them up and get a quote.
