One of my biggest concerns is that the windows I decide on purchasing will not be installed correctly. Do devices/insturments exist that I can use to check for improper installation?

Yes, but nothing electronic or fancy, just your own eyeballs. First, make sure the reveal between the sash and frame is even, and that the weatherstripping from the sashes is well seated into the frame member from top to bottom.
Next, open the window, get down on your hands and knees and sight down the sill piece that sticks up. Does it bow up or down in the middle? If so, the window was not installed correctly.
Next, open the top and bottom sash so that you can see a little less than 1/4" of light coming in from the outside. Is the light that you see even from side to side? If not, the window was not installed correctly.
The window should also have been insulated all the way around, and well caulked to prevent air and water penetration.
A suggestion if you suspect a problem, would be to ask your contractor to come out, then visually operate and inspect each window with him before final payment. This gives him a chance to answer your concerns and your questions and remedy any problems.
