Outside use of Glass for Sound Abatement

Posted At: 2004-08-22 17:22:20

I have an issue with a next door nieghbor who has put in 2 Central AC Units right off our backporch. We are approx 15 feet from the units and the porch hieght puts us about 12 feet above the top of the units. Needless to say it is intolerable. It looks like the are not goiing to address the issue so we have to take care of it here. I dont want to board up the end of our porch but instead would like to hang a couple of glass panels / or doors to keep it open but help in deadening the sound. What type of glass would you recommend . The area i need to cover is aprox 6 feet wide by 8 feet high...

Thank you
Tim Kennedy

This site I have listed below has a plethora of useful info that may be incorporated in conjunction with your original ideas. A combination of approaches, instead of just a single one may give you a better chance to reduce the decibel levels to an exceptable level you can live with.
Oberon is the sound expert on this board on windows, and I'm sure he will be helping out as usual with his useful advice and information.
Hopefully, we can give you enough helpful advice so you can make this unbearable, but common problem bearable.

Hey Tim, Just so happens we did this same thing for a customer. Funny thing, my first choice was Dynamite. Nobody liked the idea. Honestly though we just installed two sheets of glass. It just so happened I could use two pieces of 36" patio door glass. Just so happens they make eight foot doors. You would have to down size a bit to accept them though. You could also get two inactive eight foot patio door panels. Nail in a stop and punch them in. These will block the sound really well. Either idea will require some rough carpentry skills. You also want to make sure they are very secure. Falling to the ground would not be good!!! Good Luck!!

Guy's suggestion was outstanding - and I suspect that it will be the best solution you will find in your situation.

I would further suggest that the better you can seal the glass in place, the better the sound-blocking ability of the setup.

This sort of setup will block the higher frequencies better than the lower frequencies, but I suspect that the noise from the air conditioning compressors is much more annoying at the higher frequencies so that should work out nicely.

BTW, since you are attempting to block sound and are not worried about energy efficiency, look for units with the widest IG airspace you can find. A nice narrow 1/4" airspace could potential INCREASE the amount of sound passing thru. A nice 1" commercial airspace isn't great for energy usage...but in your application, who cares...but it will do a nice job of blocking those unwanted sounds.
If you can possibly find an IGU with laminated glass in one or both lites, even better.
