New storm windows vs. Replacement sash kits

Posted At: 2004-08-23 23:45:33

Hi,

My husband and I have weathered (ha-ha) two winters now in our 1920's stone and stucco home in Pennsylvania. We have super drafty windows. We have inspected most of the storm windows that came with the house, and have found some of them to be coming apart at the corner joints, and most of them just seem...cheap (e.g. the screen panels slip out of the tracks very easily ....not good when you have cats who like to sit on window sills and sometimes catch a claw in the screen).

We were assuming that we should just get new storm windows. We read about Harvey Industries' Tru Channel storm windows with an air infiltration rate of only .04 ft3. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that we'll be able to get those. Another one we found has an air infiltration rate of .62. Is that good??

THEN we heard about Marvin Tilt Pacs. I read the thread about them on here, and we don't know yet if our windows are perfectly square or not...BUT, assuming that they are, which would be a better way to go...new exterior storm windows or a Tilt Pac? Which would be less drafty? Most cost effective?

Thanks!

*J

Storm windows address air infiltration... which is only responsible for 10-15% of how a window loses energy. I recommend continuing your research on windows so you can make the best investment to suit your needs.

I totally agree with FenX. Storm windows will only waste your money. Tilt-Pacs will work fine if all the tangibles are over come. If you plan on hiring it out you may be more cost effective searching for replacement windows. If your doing it yourself then you at least have the easiest window to replace. Please spend some more time and search all your avenues. You will be glad you did.
