Retrofit VInyl Doors

Posted At: 2004-08-27 20:31:06

Hi,

We are replacing a very large sliding door.

One store quoted us with a retrofit frame -- stating that this is the best way to go.

Another store that they would NEVER install a large door using a retrofit frame becuase they have had too many problems with that in the past.

Please offer any suggestions as to whether you feel retrofit frames for large doors pose a problem.

thanx

David

Either way should be solid. The biggest problem most installers have is securing the frame in place. Replacement frames or New construction frames should all be shimmed square and at least have eight screws through out the frame. You can hit it with a car and it won't move! The New Construction application will come with a nail fin and have a better seal against your house. The replacement will require a stop to hold it in place. So either way will work just fine. It's all about the installer. If they don't do it right it's all junk. A good installer can put it in either way and be successfull!! Hope this helps.

Hey Guy,

Would it be OK to email you, directly, some questions/comments I have about the certification programs you recommended to me? If not, I'll post the questions and comments here. But, I thought it may be better to not bore everyone else with items that are specific to my situation. What do you think?

I would have had to pay $300 !!! I'm no dummy... I know a good deal when I see one !!! I worked him good cuz he wanted $250 originally, but I am sooo special that his manager called me two days later and gave me the "Yer Special" discount of $125.00 !!!

Damn... I guess you waited an extra day to get $75 huh?

I agree with Guy is all about the installer and what they are capable of doing, we have done stuff that has sales reps itching their head because they did not know we could do that with a door or trim a door in a particular way. My only beef is that a lot companies tell the customer that they will retrofit a door and still pull the frames but install a retrofit patio door. What does that mean? they pull the frames but install a door without a nail fin into an opening that had the vapor barrier compromised, why do they do that? because is faster and a patio door trims itself with the z-bar or flush fin that the patio door has.
If you go retrofit make sure that they leave the top frame and the sides they will only pull the bottom frame and install a pan flashing at the sill. The only thing is that the new door will be around 1 1/2" shorter because of the frame. If they do a new construction install make sure they re-establish the vapor barrier andcut back the stucco or siding to re-flash your opening.

My posts pertaining to the positive benefits of this site do not include the few parasitic voles such as yourself who do not offer substantive information or insight to consumers like myself. Your past posts indicate you are in the business, but the worst kind of sales cretin consumers should run away from as quickly as possible.

Fortunately, it's easy to avoid you - I shan't be treading on your threads any longer. My advice would be for others to do the same.
