Comparing Bay Windows?

Posted At: 2004-08-29 18:18:53

I am shopping for a bay window with a picture window and casements on either side. The opening is larger than most, 102 x 52. So far I have quotes for the following maufacturers, Great Lakes, Sunrise, Cavco, ReliaBilt and having a hard time comparing the quality.

The highest quote I have is $2900 including installation for Great Lakes Gold. It seems from the other posts that ReliaBilt is lower quality from Lowe's, but info on the other 3 is limited.

Anyone recommend a better manufacturer (i'm in NJ) that would be in this price range or better?

I've installed the Great Lakes and the Reliabilt products. When dealing with windows we talk about good, better and best. Bay's and Bows are in a world all alone. I've seen some of the best window makers butcher these units. If you live in NJ here are some things you want to look for. INSULATION - You need an insulated seat board and head area. If they build a roof or attach it insulate above!! If the seat board is un-insulated you will get bigtime moisture on your glass inside. That drips on the wood and the mold mildew thing starts up. There are two ways installers usually install these units. They use a cable system or a platform to slide it on. It will depend on your existing opening for that decision. Which ever one you choose you need this to be level and true. Nothing goes out of whack fater than a bay unit with casement flankers. Make sure you get the Crank outs with the eccentric adjustment under each pivot arm. THis is a critical piece of hardware to have on a CO window. If it goes out of alignment it can be shifted a bit for proper operation. If they don't have this. Don't buy them!!!! You will need it. Any installer out there knows these have saved their butt more than ounce!! In comparison to each other. How many seals on each unit. two or three seals are good. Bulb Seal or brush? Cold weather state go bulb. Locking hardware: One lock inside or two. Is it Heavy Duty hardware. When you crank. does it flex all around. It should stay some what firm and in place. Most installers never install the lock down screws through the handles. That's why so many shake and wobble around. Make sure they get secured!! I would think any of these will be fine for you. Good Luck!!!

If you are in NJ, I would recommend taking a look at the Schuco products and comparing them to the others mentioned. They should be far from your price range either. Email me if interested and I can help connect you to a dealer. Good Luck.
