Factory mulls vs. installer mulls

Posted At: 2004-08-30 16:41:58

I have a quote on Alside 8000 windows and the sales guy wrote "factory mulls if possible." I'll be having 2 sets of 3 windows mulled together, and 1 set of 2 windows mulled together (all double-hungs).

This sales guy implied that factory mulls are better.

My questions:

Are factory mulls better?

Should I insist on having the mulls done one way or the other (factory or installer)?

Factory mulls are the only way to go. If the factory can't/won't do it there must be a good reason.

Factories do have a good reason not to mull some windows. Size is a real good factor a lot of companies have a limit usually after so many square feet. If the window is real big even if it's a good mull when transported the seal can break and when installed it may give you problems on your first rains. On the other hand if your installer does not know what they are doing or how to mull your windows field mulling can be inneective too. I would call the manufaturer and have them send you mulling instructions and work together with your contractor to make sure is done right. Do not disrespect your contractor by trying to tell him how to do it but rather work together as it is on yours and his best interest to only do this once.

Hey Joe, Field mull jobs are required at certain times as EZ stated. The biggest factor is shipping. If a mulled unit will be to large or heavy it will break in transit. Waiting for it is another game again. Most lumber yards or window distibutors usually provide staff to field mull units. The other times is the salesman screwed up and didn't order the unit mulled in the first place. This happens most the time. They will never admit it though. Make sure your field people are skilled in mulling windows. This is not a job for a rookie. Usually mull kits are sent out with instructions on putting the windows together. If they send a long steel bar! Put it in. Don't let them leave this out. It holds the windows from flexing in the middle after installed. Important safety feature to remember. Other than that make sure it's properly sealed. Most the time we set the lower unit and lift the top piece in place. We then mull it together while in the opening. We can see that it fits right and it weighs less. Either way it should be fine if done right. A field mull can be just as good as the factory if done right.

Thanks all, this is good information. As for the size of the windows, the largest opening that's taking mulled windows will be a set of three 32"w X 48"h, for a total when all three are mulled together of 96"w X 48"h.
