Replacinging existing vinyl windows

Posted At: 2004-08-31 20:48:31

Great board! I've been here often and got a lot of good info. Now I have a question. I need to replace 11 double hung vinyl windows and 1 vinyl picture window in my 10 year old house. The existing windows were garbage Acorn windows and they all have fogged, are covered w/ mold and do not drain properly. I keep my winter humidity at about 40% for the comfort ofd my wife and kids and the condensation is so bad on these windows that the water runs down my walls or freezes in the window sill. The drafts are horrible. I have decided to replace them all with better quality vinyl windows. I have done alot of research and vinyl windows with the "Super Spacer" seem to be the way to go. I found a local dealer/installer here in Central NJ who sells/installs Soft-Lite windows. I brought my measurements in and he quoted me a price of $5.775.00 complete. These is for top-of-the-line Soft-Lite triple-pane, LOw-e glass w/Super Spacer and grilles, and Aller-Guard 100 weatherstripping. He states that he can replace the existing vinyl windows without disturbing the vinyl siding. The price includes all labor, removal and disposal of old windows, exterior capping, and cleanup. If I did my measurements right, I have 167 s.f. of window area. Based on his quote, that's about $35.00/s.f. which seems OK. My questions is: anyone have experience with replacing existing vinyl windows in the way I described? It looks like Soft-Lite a good windows... Any comments? Look forward to your replies.

Thanks,
Mark

We don't give opinions without facts on this board and we don't bash windows without a lot of FACTS.

Mark,
Do not replace with a cheaper grade. I tell you what if he is putting tripple pain super spacer with low e, you are getting the cream of the crop. Go with it, it seems like a very fair price especially for the product you are getting. Super Spacer is an absolute awesome product. Just think about it, your current windows are only 10yr old, the last thing you want is ten years from now needing to replace these windows.

Mark, It looks like your upgrading from where you are. So a plastic bag would be better. My only concern is what they are doing on the outside? Are they using a vinyl brickmold or covering it with wood. I would make sure your getting something that will look the same at least. If they are cutting around the window and pulling it out. Then a flag should go up. If they install a new window with no nail fin or something to attach to the house. Leaks may become an issue. The installation may be the only concern I have. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the replies so far. I confident that the window I am being offered is good quality. I am concerned about the method that will be used to replace an existing vinyl window (I also have vinyl siding). I thought only a new construction window could be used but the installer says custom replacement windows can be used. My existing windows are not trimmed out on the inside. The sheetrock wraps from the wall into the window. In fact, I cut open a section to see what was in there and it is 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock then some cut down wood furring then the 2x4 stud. There is no stud right next to the rough opening as I thought there should be. It is padded out with sheetrock and some pieces of furring. How is the new window going to be sucured into the opening and trimmed out on the outside? I guess I need to quiz the installer some more and have him come out and take a look. His price was based on me bringing my measurements into his store. I checked and his references are good and he is a member of all of the local business bureus. Any more comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

I have a twenty-five year old house that I am replacing with Milguard vinyl windows. I have used 2" pine brick mold in the past, for trim, and have gone through much pain to seal and prime the inside and the outside of the brickmold to keep moisture out. However, after some time, a few years, the paint starts to chip and peel-off. What I am hoping is that I can buy a 2" solid vinyl brickmold that I would just have to cut-to-fit and mitre and then caulk with no paint.

I have a totally white house and during the summer I wash the outside and windows with the garden hose. I suspect that moisture from this washing gets under the paint and causes the lifting.

I have been fighting this problem for years and am hoping to find a solution.

If this is available could you please hook me up to where this vinyl product could be purchased?

Thank you for your time and considration.

Hello!
I have big dilemma with chosing right windows.
I have two good quotes:
1. For Autrium 8500 windows, sliding door and Home Depot entrance door for 6000.
2. For Soft-lite windows and sliding door and Precision entrance door for 7000. Soft-lite windows would come with brackage guarantee and have super-spacer.

Any idea does Soft-lite compare to Autrium worth 1000?
Thanks.
