Tempered Glass Code on Milgard Classic Vinyl Windows

Posted At: 2004-09-06 23:48:02

Have read all the posts in Kathe's recent thread about determining tempered glass.

Most of the windows in my remodel that are supposed to be tempered have the etched lettering described in the thread. A few don't though, and they are ones that the contractor may have screwed up on or just chosen to ignore.

I still have all the stickers on the windows and can also see numbers on the inside of the frames. Does anyone know the number code for a Milgard window that has tempered glass?

Only one of the tempered panes has a 'tempered' sticker on it.

If no one knows the code, will follow the advice of the thread and check the order, and if that doesn't work, will check with the manufacturer rep.

Thanks!

If the glass tempered due to code (and just due to your preference), your contractor will need to provide evidence in order to pass inspection. Something else to look out for is that a same sized non tempered window could be installed where a tempered window belongs. This happens all the time.

Ted, The local building inspector has to see the bug (the corner etching) on the window. If it's not it's out. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Gregs statement on installation in the wrong hole does happen a lot. Also some tempered windows only need the lower sash tempered. Check with your local inspector on requirements needed in your township. Good Luck!!!

Thanks so much for the opinion, Guy. Will watch this at inspection time if the question isn't answered by the contractor beforehand.

In most of california the code is as follows.

If your glass is within 18" from your floor it should be tempered however if that area does not exceed 9 sq ft you can get away without tempering it.

A bathroom window is in your bathtub and the sill is below 60" the glass must be tempered.

If glass is within 24" from an exterior door it should be tempered note that only panel close to the door should be tempered.

Hope this helps.

Milgard now has a SO# on each glass unit. This number gives the manufacturers rep access to the sales and production orders. With Milgard the factory rep is the key person that interfaces with the dealer, contractor, customer etc. Find out who he is and work with him.
