Replacing Windows in Previously Vinyl-Sided Home

Posted At: 2004-09-07 07:16:31

A carpenter and I replaced the windows on my house this past weekend. Originally, the carpenter had recommended nailing fins for the window. On the other hand, the sales associate at Home Depot told me different and informed me that a nailing fin is only useful when the siding is applied after the window installation since it would be quite difficult to install it under siding that's already installed. But now I'm second guessing my choice of window. Maybe I should have gone with the nailing fin.

Please provide your feedback on the following questions:
In this case, would it have being best to choose a window with a nailing fin or not? If yes, please explain the advantages of the nailing fin and how one would go about nailing the fin under the vinyl siding?

Thanks,
Marc

Mark, I guess some people really have no clue. (not speaking of you). You've been steered down the wrong road. If you ever have the chance to use a nail fin. Use it everytime you can. It's your ultimate barrier between your home and the elements penetrating your home. They have what's called a vinyl siding removal tool. Every window installer should carry one. You remove the siding and install the window. Granted this adds an extra day to your job but in the end your way better off. As for why it's better look at it this way. If you had a square hole in the roof of your car. Would you put a plug in it that has a gap around. This gap you would have to make tight from the wind and rain. How long will it keep out the water? Would a complet cover over the hole thats over lapping and caulked around each edge do a better job? You make the call!!!
