NFRC Rating Comparison

Posted At: 2004-09-16 03:03:42

One of the aspects that I'm looking at in a window is thermal efficiency. Unfortunately, I don't get much cooperation on this topic from anyone I've spoken with. They (salesmen) all seem to claim R8 or R9, but when I go onto the NFRC web site to see these numbers for myself (looking at U-ratings), I just don't see anything close to that.

What I'd like to do is to be able to compare thermal efficiency (U, SHGC, VT) between manufacturers comparing about the same sized window - say a 48" x 48".

Every time I bring it up, the sales person tells me that the NFRC label for the window I'm looking at physically isn't correct and that I'm going to get "extras" (Lo E, Argon, etc) that add up to incredible thermal efficiency, yet they never seem to be able to quantify the numbers or put the values in writing.

Can anyone offer advice on how to compare thermal efficiency?

Thanks!
