Milgard Didn't stand behind it's own windows Beware!!!

Posted At: 2004-09-17 08:15:32

I purchased Milgard Windows 3 years ago and had no problems at all. Really liked them and they looked really nice. About a year ago my son broke one of the windows with a baseball. I called the company that installed my Milgard and they said they didnt replace the glass. So I contact the local glass company and have them replace it. Only one of the panes broke. They replaced it with loe2 glass. The same kind as Milgards. Then last winter the window starts leaking. Not from the glass but the frame and not one window but two. I called the window company up and they came out to look at the windows. They referred me to Milgard and Milgard sent out a rep.(3 weeks later). The rep tells me that its the glass companies fault for the leak and I tell him that it happened on another window too. He tells me that I voided my warranty by getting the glass replaced. He tells me to pay for two more windows to solve the problem. I am pissed at this point and tell him I will contact the BBB if they dont try to solve the problem. He tells me to go ahead and he's not going to replace the windows. I call Milgard and talk to a VP of Customer Relations. He tells me that they cant replace the windows under the warranty because it was voided. I asked him what I could do and he said to buy two new windows. He said he gets alot of complaints about voiding of the warranty. He said its because Milgard doesnt have an accidental breakage warranty so every time a pane of glass breaks its going to void the warranty. He did send me to a vendor that sold me the two windows for less then what I paid before. I contacted the BBB and they said Milgard has some lawsuits concerning this problem already. The problem is that Milgard is the manufacture of the window and the installer is usually the one that takes most of the blame for problems. I am still mad I had to rebuy the windows that had a problem. Do your homework buy only windows that have accidental breakage warranties. A huge company that doesnt have this warranty like Milgard kind of makes you wonder why not?

Hope this helps. If you have kids Milgard might not be the best window for you.

Brad have you found out which window companies do have an accidental breakage warrantee? Just curious!

Schuco has an accidental breakage warranty, precisely for the reasons noted above. They realize that accidents happen and don't want someone elses glass unit in their window reducing it's performance. It also allows them to have only approved contractors do the replacement thus avoiding any compromise of the original warranty.

Not clear how your homeowners insurance played into this. Did they not cover your glass breakage? Where do you live and what Milgard factory were you working with.

Why did changing the glass on one window void the warrantee on the other window? Did they give an explanation?

I bought my windows from Home Depot. They gave me a 5 year accidental glass breakage policy and free screen damage replacement if I brought the screens in to the store.

I wonder why Brad has not chosen to answer one single question asked? I think his email name says everything.
