Heat Mirror, worth it?

Posted At: 2004-09-22 01:51:36

I live in Colorado at 6400', and have seen the temperature drop as much as 70 degrees in a day. One window under consideration is a Thermal Line Compozit (GE Cycolac) that offers Heat Mirror as an option. Is it a worthwhile option? Does it last? What are the long term problems of having film in between panes of glass? Any thoughts on the Compozit windows would also be of help

I have sold Heat mirror in past and I have decided to keep away becase of wrinkling of heat mirror film with southern sun! They also have a small hole in corner to allow transfer of preasure along with cold & Heat.I would look into a good TRIPLE PANE UNIT!!

Heat Mirror does have remarkable performance numbers. But I have to agree with Window Man that there have been some major issues with the PET film wrinkling when exposed to the hot sun, and also seal failures due to the different expansion and contraction rates between the PET film and the glass and seal.
Southwall Technologies (they sell the stuff) claims that the wrinkling issue is under control, and it may be, but I would ensure that the warranty is VERY specific about PET film probelms before I would sign a contract for Heat Mirror.

BTW, the technology that became Heat Mirror was first proposed at MIT back in the late 70's / early 80's as I recall.

Voice of experience.

I am curious as to the problems you have seen.

Thanks.
