Help choosing windows

Posted At: 2004-09-24 17:00:51

I am so confused. In my area, Lexington, KY, I have access to Traco, Marvin, Gilkey, and Polaris windows. I cannot afford to make a mistake when it comes to choosing windows. Two of the companies, the Marvin and Traco ones have been in business a long time and do not have any complaints filed with the Better Business burea. The traco ones are less expensive which is attractive to me, but I don't want to have problems later on. I sure would appreciate any help. There is a Schuco dealer bout 80 miles awa. How do thie r products and prices compare to Traco and Marvin?

Nancy -

I'm under the impression that Traco is a rather poor choice for a residence. They specialize more in commercial applications. Marvin is probably the highest quality WOOD window around but has to be maintained. Marvins' other windows are a mixed bag - many negative comments and not so many positives.

Having just had Schuco installed in my home I admit to a bias - but now that they're in, I can easily see why there are so many raves about them. Pricewise I'd expect Schuco to be higher than Traco but less than Marvin wood. Gilkey receives positive comments also but are known to be high-priced.

BTW - If you use the Search function on this site, you can glean a LOT of knowledge about the above three - not so sure about Polaris.

Best of luck in your ultimate decision.

Nancy:

You may want to check out Vinyl Kraft Windows. They service Lexington, KY and offer vinyl and wood replacement windows. Their web site is www.vinylkraft.com and their 800# is 800-800-4031.

Look and see if you can find a Vinylkraft dealer in your area. These windows are made with an excellent vinyl frame and have a glass pack sealed with Super Spacer. They will provide superior thermal performance and longevity.

Just to throw in my own two cents worth -- not to take this thread in a direction it was not intended, but...

I'm not sure what you mean about "Marvin's other windows are a mixed bag -- many negative comments and not so many positives."

I just bought a bunch of Marvin Integrity windows (fiberglass frames, wood interiors). I posted several times on this site asking for advice, and never once received a negative comment on these. In fact, for the price (very reasonable), I feel that this is a real nice window, as did the other folks who commented. Although they are not SUPREMELY efficient (they still meet Energy Star criteria, with U values between .29 and .35 in my case), they are argon filled, low E II, and nicely built. And they look REALLY nice.

Just my opinions,

Steve

Steve -

Thanks for the question. I must apologize to all. For some reason I was under the impression that some Marvin windows were inferior and I now think I had mixed Andersen into a part of that equation.

If I've caused anyone to be misinformed I do apologize - it was totally inadvertent.

Art --

No problem, and thanks for your response. You mentioned that you may have had Marvin mixed up with Andersen -- and this would make sense. There indeed have been many negative posts on this site with respect to the Renewal by Andersen line.

Take care --

Steve

Remember that comparing a vinyl to wood or fiberglass is apples to oranges.

However, a city the size of Lexington (250K) is bound to have some additional choices. A quick check of the Yellow Pages shows at least one Gorell dealer and an Alside, too. I can offer no specific recommendation, but there's bound to be some additional choices if you check around.
