MARVIN vs MILGARD

Posted At: 2004-09-28 19:05:43

We live in the SF Bay area. Our home is 29 years old. Our single pane windows are labeled 'RADCO' SERIES "800" WEATHER-LOK. They have the brown aluminum frame and sill. I want to replace them with double pane windows. I think I want vinyl clad this time as I believe that they will help keep the cold out better? I'd like to hear from others about Marvin vs. Milgard. I'm considering having a contractor friend do the installation rather than a window company, but I am open to hearing pros and cons. He does small remodeling jobs and has had experience put in some (not lots) of windows.

We will be replacing 2 sliding doors, 1 bay window (middle section slides open from both sides) 6 bedroom windows, 3 bathroom windows plus 2 kitchen windows (one is 95" wide)... on a single story house.

Thanks for any and all input -- this is a BIG deal for us and since we plan to stay in our home another 20-30 years I want to get it right!

I think you need a few clarifications in your post.

You mentioned you think you want "vinyl clad". There are vinyl clad (wood) windows (Andersen), but this is not the same as an "all vinyl" window.

Marvin makes a wood window, a wood w/exterior aluminum cladding (think of it as heavy metal veneer), and fiberglass. As far as I know, Marvin does not make a vinyl clad window (or a vinyl window, for that matter).

Milgard makes typical vinyl windows and some fiberglass.

So, unless I'm mistaken, neither Marvin nor Milgard makes a "vinyl clad" window that you asked about. Marvin vs Milgard would be more a direct comparision only with the fiberglass line (my opinion).
