DIY repair of insulated glass

Posted At: 2004-10-02 22:29:36

Hi,
We are wondering about repairing our insulated glass. They are aluminum windows that were installed when the house was built 30 years ago. We have been able to fix everything on them but the foggy glass. Is there a place that we can buy spacers?
Thanks so mcuh for any help.
Pat

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings Pat, but realistically, there is nothing a home-owner can do to repair a failed IG unit.

You may be able to buy IGU's from your local glass shop to insert in the existing windows, but that option would not be at the top of my "good ideas" list, not with 30 year old aluminum windows.

Almost everyone on this board will say that this is not a good DIY project and I would have to agree; but yes, Pat there is a source for homeonwers just like you that want to try. Go to http://www.crlaurence.com

click on AtoZ Product Index and click on I for insulated glass and then if that is not enough go to S for spacers.

They will even sell you Edgetech Super Spacer. Tools and instruction and butyl and silicone and anything else you want. C R Laurence is a real candy store for glaziers and window service guys and even window installers. They are a huge huge company with lots of branch warehouses all over. They are for professionals in the trade, not the public, so not many people have heard of them. but I assure you every progressive glass shop has. They have an amazing inventory of window parts, locks, wheels glazing bead etc.

I'm hoping we just didn't understand the question from Pat. Pat if your wondering about pulling the spacer out of the glass unit and doing it over. NO GOOD!! The factory has a tough time doing occasionally in house. So you really don't want to even think about it. You can replace the glass unit only though. This is a rather easy job if you have the proper tools. Your window unit has a removable glass stop on one side or the other. This stop holds the glass in place. You can pop this off and get a good look at your existing glass for measurement. You can then measure and give these sizes to your local glass company. Make sure you give them the thickness of the unit! If this is wrong your ship doesn't sail!!! I would suggest having your local glass shop do this one for you. It may be best to let them do the entire job. All you have to do is make on little slip and your glass is cracked. Good Luck!!!

I read it as bebuilding the IG unit itself...
Guy, you explained that much better than I did!
Thanks.
