Aluminum vs vinyl sliding glass door

Hello, I’m looking at an aluminum vs vinyl sliding glass door. These are PGT brands; I was told the aluminum version has a better boxed screen slider and about $400 less. Of course the vinyl would be better for thermal. What are to good and bad features for both aluminum and vinyl sliding glass door...

Re: Vinyl Replacement Install?

Does anyone have any suggestions on installing a vinyl replacement window, with a flange, in a top arched frame, with stucco exterior, that has a key stone (fraised about an inch from the exterior, for looks) in the stucco (at the top of the arch)? The issue is: the flange would need to over-lap an ...

Re: Vinyl Replacement Install?

Thanks everyone for the input, I'm going to cut back the frame (wood wall/frame) windows. Yes it will take longer, but it's my home and it will be a better build. Block frame, I have enough room on the exterior, so no cut back is needed. One exception, is on a bathroom tile window, where I have tile...

Vinyl Replacement Install?

Hello, I was planning on measuring the inside (sheetrock to sheetrock) for replacement windows, and sliding the extra 1 1/4" thick vinyl window (new are 3 ¼”, old are ~2” thick) overlapping the sheetrock & sill. This of course will show a thicker frame from the inside. However, if I cut 1 ¼...

Re: Measurement for Box Window & cutting old nail fin on alum

Anthony, Thanks for the post. On the measurement, I'm asking if you include the buck on your measurement for a pure box (no nail fin or flange on the front) window frame. I've read that some people screw the frame to the block, with no buck (treated wood) between the window frame or block. Sorry for...

Re: vinyl replacement windows Gorell vs. PGT

Ecostar, Thanks for your help. Anyone, for those of us in coastal states and ones that have block/frame houses........when measuring for the PGT 2300/2360 box frames, should we include the buck (treated wood), which would give a smaller measurement...Or, should we measure block to block, larger meas...

Measurement for Box Window & cutting old nail fin on alum

1. Anyone have suggestions on how to measure for a box frame rrplacement window (no nail fin or face flange)? Do I include the treated wood buck? 2. Should I use an angle grinder or trim saw (with metal blade) to cut the old alum windows out? I plan to just cut the window nail fin off, leaving the o...

Re: vinyl replacement windows Gorell vs. PGT

Thanks for the feedback, on the lock; I don’t see technically how the cam lever lock could be reached due to the lip seal. So I’m guessing it was some rep./dealer trying to start bad PR, it was a discussion on one of these forms that I picked it up from. I was asking on the vinyl, because I just don...

Re: vinyl replacement windows Gorell vs. PGT

Has anyone had or seen any issues with vinyl on Gorell, PGT, or Simonton Impression windows discoloring or cracking? One other question, I read on a post that a person could unlock/open the PGT's with a knife. The model I seen, this could be done, due to a lip. So, I don't know if this is a competin...

Re: Simonton Impression or Reflection vs PGT 2300?

EcoStar,
Thank you for the reply. From my understanding the 2200 is a SH in the PGT. Have you ever had any vinyl discoloring or cracking?
Thank You

Simonton Impression or Reflection vs PGT 2300?

Hello, Like many consumers, I've been reading reviews, and looking at vinyl replacement windows (19, about half block, half frame/wood) and a sliding glass door (1 6068 in block). From what I've seen of the frame, structure, lips, seals, locks, etc... the PGT is just as good and better in some cases...

Re: vinyl replacement windows Gorell vs. PGT

Hello, I'm looking at Gorell vs PGT as well. The trim is a little different, and Gorell uses a metal coil band, where PGT uses a elastic string (I think) to help with opening the windows.
-I'd like to know the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Also Gorell has a trans. warr. (50yrs)
