need recommendation on replacement windows in New Orleans

#1 Post by oldjimbo3 »

I need recommendation on replacement windows. I am about to replace all 19 of the windows in my home. The old windows are original 1976 aluminum builder grade. My house is a two story, brick veneer first floor and T-111 wood siding clad second floor; located in New Orleans, LA.

I think the replacement windows should be:
white, full frame, insulated replacement windows;
low-solar-gain, designed for hot climate. e.g. New Orleans / southern Zone.
AAMA gold label certification - desirable
Energy Star qualified.
performance characteristics: U <= 0.35; SHGC <= 0.35; VT >= 0.5
Are these above listed requirements reasonable - or do they need changes?

Materials - I have no clue. I have heard horror stories about vinyl in this climate. But that is what most folks seems to be pushing. Any recommendations on materials. especially vinyl?

My wife likes Window World. Two of her friends have had their house done and are happy. Any comments?

I have had estimates of $6,000 - $15,000. I Hope to come in at $6,000-$8,000. Is that reasonable?
I want better than average windows but not top of the line.

Please suggest brands and if possible models.

Is it best to pick the window then the installer or the other way around?

How important is it that the installer be around for the expected life of the windows? Or do I just depend upon the manufacturer to help solve problems if the local install is no longer around.

Any suggestions on expert window contractors in the area?

Looking at your ideal budget, you are going to be hard pressed to get one of the windows that I would consider nice that that price point and even less likely when you consider the install type.

Your wishlist for performance is very good and makes good sense.

Window World is a big company and does a whole bunch of work. There seem to be 1 horror story for every couple of good stories and what I have seen of the product lately does not give me the warm fuzzies either.

Do you research and understand that the adage of going cheap is expensive in the end does hold true with windows as well.

Good advice above. I'd also look at the air infiltration ratings.

For New Orleans, the SHGC should be in the .19 - .23 range and no higher. Don Young's thermally-broken aluminum window is available in New Orleans, and is worth a look. Sunrise is a very good vinyl window and they have dealers in your area as well.

Good catch Randy.

Missed that high number on the first time through.

Plenty of heat in New Orleans already. No need to let too much through.
