Looking for moderately-priced garden window...

#1 Post by JoeTheAuthor »

We live in Hendersonville, NC, and would like to replace our existing garden window (36" x 36") with a new one. We've heard horror stories about leaking (ours does not leak, but it does fog up) and outrageous prices. Can anyone recommend on that would not cost us an arm and a leg and will still be well insulated and leakproof? We are looking at Ply Gem window replacements; is there garden window a possibility?

As soon as you find one, let me know.

They are notoriously expensive and often times, a great idea on paper until the client gets the estimate.

   We like the one we have, but it's compromised as far as the insulation factor is concerned. Would probably go for another one if the price is right. My wife loves having it, and I love my wife.

I'm not really a fan of garden windows, especially if they don't have some sort of overhang above them to keep water from constantly soaking that top lite of glass. It's impossible to keep that angled lite of glass clean and water tends to lie on the exterior glazing beads until it finds a way in to cause trouble regardless of the irrigation system.

I'd rather have a projected frame window with a neat little roof.

Things to look for in a garden window:
Full/real lifetime warranty
Non plywood seat board, or fully laminated under the windows.
If you want vents how close are the handles.
Install:
You need the best
Weight bearing knee braces.
