Re: Replacement window SHGC question
It all depends on location. The advice above is good for Pittsburgh. However you might do better with high SHGC on yours south facing, lower SHGC on east/west. If you got a lot of trees it can affect things to. Every house and location is unique. Here is a some good info on it: https://www.energy.go...

Re: Deciding on brands Zen/NT/Vistamark/Simonton
Ringer installs only in central Texas but they sell to DIY types like me and builders all over Texas. They got 3-lines - the Performa is their low end line which they stock in common sizes for cash/carry. While it is their low-end it has double-strength glass, metal reinforced meeting rails and othe...

Re: Deciding on brands Zen/NT/Vistamark/Simonton
When we were shopping a few months ago, Randy was only doing Houston, but perhaps he has moved into Central Texas. I wish he was here when we were deciding. Look at Ringer Windows. They have their factory/showroom in Taylor. We ended up going with them for most of our windows but we did our own inst...

Re: Awning Windows for emergency egress
I doubt you will find one. The glass in an awning window, even a small one can weigh 20-30 pounds which would be too heavy for a child to safely lift or push out of the way. What size are you needing? Do the rooms have more than one opening? If so, maybe you could use a mix of casement or awnings - ...

Re: Dissimilar glass, does it matter which number comes first?
If you live in an area with hail or baseballs, I'd want the thicker glass on the outside as it will be stronger. Also, rain would likely be quieter when it hits the window. My consumers 2 cents for what it is worth.

Re: pvc casings
I used PVC boards for the window sills inside the house where my kids like to leave cold drinks. They have held up well, but when cut are foamy inside. I don't think I'd want to rip them. I'd consider finding vinyl boards the width you need or use Hardie trim. Also, check with building supply houses...

Re: Handyman installs
It is hard to catch but I noticed the energy label on the window had him installing clear glass with no LoE glass. From his other videos he is in Mississippi a place you would think we need at least LoE-270 or 366. I wonder how blocks that are glued in with caulk is going to work at all. He totally ...

Handyman installs
I've been reading a lot about how to install windows and how the install matters. I then ran across a video of what might be the worst install I've ever seen.
This is a long video but is almost comical to me and I am not even a Window Pro:

Re: Single-Hung - looking for good one to meet opening size.
We decided just to upgrade to casements for the upstairs 3060 windows. We will do single-hung in the living room as we got a front porch that would interfere with casements. To measure, I had difficulty squeezing my Texas-sized behind through the existing aluminum windows to scaffolding I was using ...

Re: What makes a good vinyl casement window?
We ordered from a local manufacturer(Ringer) who uses a Veka profile. We also looked at Milgard and NT. This part of Texas doesn't have many many of the brands they do up north (Okna/Softlite/Sunrise). We liked the thinner frame profile on Ringer - 2.25 inches on the sliders and single hungs, and 3....

Re: What makes a good vinyl casement window?
I looked at the casement window yesterday in person. The casement looked solid. What is a roller system? This one had a single locking handle that would raise/lower a long series of latches up the side opposite the hinge - kind of like a zipper. The awning version had two locks. It had a double-seal...

Re: What makes a good vinyl casement window?
Thanks. The ones I am looking at are a DP50. U-value .26, SHGC .18. Those are probably good enough for central Texas. We are about 200 miles from the coast. The have the folding handle and an interior BetterVue screen. Are reinforcements needed like hung windows to prevent sagging? The manufacturer ...

What features do you look for in a good casement window? Besides spacers and glass, what features are must haves?

Re: Replacing aluminum windows with vinyl
They could use some Protectowrap on the sill, but your installer is doing it better than most around me in South Texas. You also are probably missing a step - they should be screwing the new window in place. The screws goes into the stud. They should not be drilling into the bottom, only the sides. ...

Re: Single-Hung - looking for good one to meet opening size.
Good point about silders looking like casements. I think it would add a modern look to the house. We have one awning window and love the crank style plus it seems less drafty than any other window. The casements won't work well in the living room as they would swing out onto the covered front porch ...
