Re: Gorell window issue

the biggest problem we have had with Gorell windows is that the screens on their double hungs do not let water drain out fast enough in a hard driving rain. What seems to be happening is that the sill fills up with about an inch of water and if you have a high wind, it will force that water around t...

Yeah, that's pretty funny. A couple years ago I was at a Remodellers Convention in Baltimore, MD and Andersen invited a bunch of us to breakfast to preview a variety of test screens, and give our opinions on each. They made us swear to secrecy about the whole thing, and it made me think right then t...

Buying windows is usually an expensive decision to make. It does make sense to have both the husband and wife involved in the decision. When both their questions and concerns are addressed it makes the process go a whole lot smoother. When a homeowner isn't interested in having both parties present,...

I'm suprised they don't call it a "California" bend. ;)

So an "Andersen" bend is just a 908 brickmould bend? Was Andersen the first to use 908 brickmould?

I've put up a few solariums made by Sunshine Rooms out of Wichita, KS. You don't hear about them too much (poor marketing?) but they're pretty sweet. Seems like one of their selling points was the large glass area- 39x39 if I recall correctly. It's been a few years since I've put one up. The roman s...

I'd also recommend Pella out of the list you provided. However they might be a little more than you want to spend.

There is no window that should require an extra charge for tearout. An experienced installer would have those aluminum frames out in 10 minutes flat. $150 per window is insane. $150 would represent 3 hours extra labor or 2 hours extra labor + $50 in extra materials, so you could ask him which it is....

I like them. Will you be painting or staining them? But if you are concerned about losing glass, as you mentioned in another post with the vinyl windows, you're still losing glass w/ the precision fit, just not as much. Pella doesn't have the most impressive u-values, I'd say they are middle of the ...

What??? Schuco doesn't have its own magazine??? Maybe it just didn't make your list. LOL I've subscribed to Journal of Light Construction for years now, and would recommend it. It deals with a variety of subjects, and their articles on windows, trim, etc... always seem to be very informative, often ...

I've got to agree 100% with earwax. Installing the door with nailing fins, caulking behind the nailing fins, using membrane tape over the nailing fins, lapping the building paper over the top nailing fin... plus the pan that earwax mentioned, are the best ways to a problem free installation. Let's s...

The OSI Quad caulking that I mentioned above is what I use for exterior caulking such as caulking around the aluminum cladding, if needed, or around the exterior of the window, such as when installing from the outside. Geocel Pro Flex seems to be very similar to me, although I haven't compared the A...
