Soft-Lite, Jeld-Wen, and Marvin Infinity in KY
Last year, I received here much valuable information and helpful answers to my questions about my own window purchase. Now, I am writing for a friend who is shopping windows and installers in central Kentucky. My friends contacted the dealer I used. They have their own in-house installer crew. The r...

Re: Grid alignment
JScott, You got it. Weber involved the mfr rep from the very beginning. The owner assured me up front that his goal was that I be 110% satisfied, not just 100%. It seems the owner is passionate about exceeding the customers expectations and I bet he feels pretty frustrated he could not meet that goa...

Re: Grid alignment
Window4U, Thanks for your helpful response. Knowing that such problems are common puts this in perspective. I have considered what you said about daily life and what visitors and passers-by will see. And about the fine-toothed comb. The sash that ended up in the opening is better than the original i...

Re: Grid alignment
Update: The two remaining sashes were to go in the same opening. I had asked that originals be replaced because the vertical grids in the top sash were "out" by 1/4" and 1/8" respectively with respect to the vertical grids in the bottom sash. The window company owner and I agreed...

Re: Grid alignment
Anthony and Sky, Thanks for the supportive comments. Sorry to leave y'all hanging, but there has been nothing to report until now. The windows are Soft-Lite Imperial LS (glass package by Guardian), sold and installed by Weber Windows of Louisville, KY. I am *very* happy with Weber. They have worked ...

Praise for my window installer
I would like to say nice things about my window installer and praise the company and its owner by name. What is the protocol here? I am extremely please with the owner, his direct-employee crew, and every step of the process: the pre-sale contact, the proposal, the installation, and even--and as it ...

Grid alignment
I have read a couple of other posts that indicated some problems with misaligned grids in SuperSpacer-equipped glass packages. I recently had 14 double-hung windows replaced, 5 with grids. Glass by Guardian. Out of the 10 sashes, 5 had grids that were out of true by 1/8" or more. In other words...

Re: Simonton 9800, Alside Sheffield, Others? Cost?
There are brands available in your area such as Softlite Elements, Gorell, Sunrise, Okna, and Starmark in the same price range. Based on what I've read here, I'm pretty sure our market isn't as competitive as it may be elsewhere. For 13 double-hungs and one slider, the Gorell 5155 came in at about ...

Re: Simonton 9800, Alside Sheffield, Others? Cost?
I obsessed in this forum about these two windows a few weeks ago. I used the search function and asked a lot of questions. Caveats about the Sheffield's performance over time as well as reservations about its sill design are common in the posts by the pros dating back several years. Contrast t...

Re: Air Leakage
I was shopping awhile back and trying to get my head around air infiltration. AI numbers are posted in cubic feet per minute, correct? And the results are recorded for infiltration at windspeeds of 25 mph or so, right? Well, I can't imagine what a cubic foot per minute feels like, so I broke it down...

Re: Soft-Lite Imperial LS: Slider vs. awning
Heard back from the Soft-Lite rep: .01 / 8+ air/water infiltration for the awning and .02 / 10+ for the slider. We chose the slider because of no appreciable difference in air inf. And it's cheaper. Water inf. isn't a problem b/c it's high on a wall that doesn't get much wind-driven rain. Water goin...

Soft-Lite Imperial LS: Slider vs. awning
Trying to decide between slider vs. awning for installation above a bathtub/shower. Imperial LS double-pane, argon/LowE, SuperSpacer. It is replacing a Caradco awning window that sticks and has to be bumped to get it started. Screen removal/replacement required, adding to the hassle. It is upstairs,...

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments. It will be a couple of months before we can schedule the windows. I'll let you know how it turns out.

In the ballpark, or keep shopping?
Well, awhile back, I started with Gilkey, Alside, and PGT. Thanks to what I have learned from lots of reading here, and some questions in a couple of other threads, I ended up comparing Simonton, Gorell, and Soft-Lite. And upping my budget accordingly. I have decided to go with the Soft-Lite Imperia...

Re: suggestions for N.E. Florida
I second anthony on that one. From a lay perspective--having recently evaluated the Simonton 5500 and 9800 for my own home--I found them both to have an excellent balance between price and quality. Nice range of glass packages, too, so finding something eligible for the new tax credit is no problem.
