Re: Need advise
Does the price include "capping"?Are these inserts or framed units with nailing fins? Are they replacing your trim in and out,if so with what. What exactly does the bid say is being done. Can you post a copy of his bid for all to see?

Re: Do already existing aluminum capping needs to be replaced
All you would need to do is cover the blindstop or the strip at the sill.It typically looks better if done in the same color as the aluminum but can also be done in the color of your vinyl window.I would not replace it unless it is in bad shape or faded badly. You can always replace it later.Sometime...

Re: having a change of heart re. replacing windows
Why not get an energy audit done if you want to see where you need insulation or where you are leaking air.

Re: Just did a MW sash replacement and have caulking questions
I am a big believer in storm windows, at least in MN.The tracks and the foam on sash kits are vunerable to the elements. Historical windows here are required to have wood glazing and be non clad. The storm windows help with this as well as the performance #'s. Do most of you just put a screen in on s...

Re: Just did a MW sash replacement and have caulking questions
Even if you get paint on the track it can restrict zthe movement of the track. On the back of the track, the foam is different at the outer edge where it meets the bindstop. This outer edge of is weather resistant. The storm window should be left in place or replaced with with this system, I would not...

Re: Full frame replacement - new flashing, tar paper, etc?
I normally would leave the siding on, but i normally work on old house's.I measure from the inside and outside and take the trim off on 1 window if the others are the same.I usually like to match the outside of frame measurements from the old to the new.

Re: Sunrise vs Atrium vs Polar Seal
The contractors should have the info on the windows,or you can contact the companies directly.I would also ask for more detailed info on air, water, structure testing ect.i would also look at the actual windows themselves. Ifami withe am not familiar polar Seal,,I believe the Sunrise haave their glazi...

Re: Don Young vs Silverline by Andersen
I usually research any window I install.Insulate with scotch tape? As many would would say, I would rather have a lower grade window installed properly then a high end window installed poorly.I am not trying to defend Silverline or putting down DYC windows, I was just trying to state the facts to cl...

Re: Don Young vs Silverline by Andersen
Silverline 9500's are 0.85 in frame and 0.75 in sash, the 8500's are 0.75 and 0.75. The air in filtration #'s on the Don Young 5400 series is 0.14 and the Silverline's #'s are 0.13, neither are very stellar.Silverline's structual rating up to 44x62 is H-R 45 and Don young's is H-R 30.How did you figu...

Do you know how thick the extrusions are or not, or are you just making up a bunch of B.S.. I wasn't saying Silverline was a good or bad product I was just curious if you knew what you were talking about or like making your own facts.

How thick are the extrusions on the Don Young window? Silverline 9500 series comes standard with D.S glass.

What specific things are poorly made ? What parts are made with poor quality?I see these windows always get bashed but nothing is ever specific, just broad general statements. Not trying to defend just curious.

If you are just doing inserts try putting them in yourself, they are pretty easy and you could save a boatload of cash.
