Re: Vinyl or Fibrex windows

No. The fact that she dropped her price by over 2K right off the bat should indicate a little bit about her ability to tell the truth. She is out right lying and I would tell her to provide some data to indicate that quality vinyl windows only last 5 years and when she can't, tell her to sell her ho...

Re: CertainTeed Window quote

I am not sure there would be a "best" window. Probably as unlikely as saying one model of car was the "best". What is most suitable for your home may make one window better for your home than another. You should probably list what your home's requirements are and what the climate...

Re: CertainTeed Window quote

I would never recommend someone getting only one quote on a project. I also think that you would be well served to snoop around this board a good bit to attempt to educate yourself somewhat prior to the next estimate you get. Certainteed, much like Andersen, is a good window but not the "best&q...

You should definitely spend the money on an Impact rated window.

Do a search on Impact window on this forum and you will find pages of information.

Re: Maintaining wide window ledges with replacement windows

Most replacement windows are actually 3 1/4" wide. You can get narrower framed windows but 3 1/4" is pretty much the standard. You would really be losing that much over existing but you could go with a smaller profile if necessary.

Re: Gutter leaf protectors question....

I am amazed at what some people are charging for gutter caps and leaf protection these days. How much should they be charging? Depends on the area of the country, product, etc... To broad a question without giving more information. Would you care to expand? Skydawggy, send me your email or email me...

Re: Gutter leaf protectors question....

The Alcoa product was probably "Leaf Relief" and is a decent product that I use. For retro installs, I have used a product called RainFlow that is a very easy install and seem to hold up well. It is a drop in product and not a helmet. For gutter and cap, we use a product called leaf guard ...

Re: Requesting advise

To expand upon windowmannynj's comments and perhaps shed a bit of light into the situation.... The Alside 6000 window that your are looking at is the Alside Sheffield. Quite a beefy extrusion and window. It has a clip in sill design which is not really desirable because of the impact on viewable gla...

Lowes sells many different windows. What manufacturer are you talking about specifically in the Lowes window.

The difference in the glass spacing makes virtually no difference.

Re: Adjusting the tension on a constant balance / coil balance

Many times a balance will not be strong enough because the window is not shimmed tightly enough. The friction caused by proper shimming is part of the calculation to a properly operating balance. Tightening the screw jacks on each side of the frame may be just enough to solve your problem if your w...

Re: Adjusting the tension on a constant balance / coil balance

Some constant force balance systems are not really designed to be adjustable. The old MacGuever way to do it was to just tighten the screw down that was holding the balance coil to the frame of the window. This would create slightly more tension by creating more friction inside the balance and there...

Re: Moisture problems in the winter on my windows.

Air can hold varying amounts of water vapor or moisture. The warmer the air is, the more moisture it can hold. The amount of moisture in the air, expressed as a percentage of the maximum amount the air could hold at a given temperature, is called its relative humidity. For health and comfort, indoor...
