High SHGC?
So... if I understand correctly, I want the very lowest U Value on all of the windows. In addition to this, I want a low SHGC on the north, east, and west sides of the house because there won't typically be that much solar heat gain from those directions and a high SHGC I can find on the south side...

Re: Noisy replacement windows
I think this may be the first time in about a year that I’m posting new messages (they don’t let me out much…) :) This may be too late but I hope it's helpful information. Smith9899 and i♥nyc bring up an interesting point. Sound/noise can actually be worse with new windows than they were with the ol...

Re: HURD VINYL GLAZING STOPS.
Hurd uses vinyl glazing stops on wood units but not on clad units. You can still get them; just contact Hurd. They would not be under warranty anymore so you'd most likely have to pay for them, but they should be available. As an aside, if there's any windows that are not getting the stops replaced,...

Re: Need Help with New Window Problem
. . . I have to think it's the warm/cold air coming into contact with the lower portion of the jamb liner . . . It seems to me unlikely that the jamb liner material would be forming condensation; they're typically made of vinyl and vinyl is a decent insulator (although it can happen with certain co...

Re: Thoroughly confused on casement full frame replacements
Starting off by first asking questions like jscott did is the best step to addressing your issues. I can't add to the question list but do have one additional thought. Many of the homes I've seen that are in the 13 year old range have double hung window sizes that are 36" or wider. If your wind...

Re: wood vs. vinyl - cost / performance
I pretty much agree with WOW. (BTW, good job eliminating the low-end windows; makes for a logical and better comparison with premium vinyl vs. premium wood). Regarding pricing, vinyl rarely would cost more than wood. The half price comment is generally true. In regards to performance, there are many...

Re: Does the "eyebrow" have to be replaced?
Skydawggy essentially already said this, but if you are getting "new construction" windows, then the eyebrow window is generally replaced, at least if you want it done right. With new construction windows the glass, sash, and window frame are replaced. If you're getting replacement windows...

Re: Eagle (Division of Andersen)
Five years ago most Andersen windows could not be made in custom sizes. Now most of their windows can be ordered in custom sizes. Some of Andersen's builder grade offerings are not available as custom but the good stuff is. Since both windows you are considering are available in custom sizes, and bo...

Re: How is this Pella estimate
With regards to your question about price, the price seems about right, assuming it includes installation. As for part two of your question, it's slow work to stain the windows yourself but it can be done. For about $100 per casement you could order them prefinished but you only have 8 or 9 interior...

Re: clarifying rebate issue
There are plenty of windows with Low E glass that qualify for the $1500 tax credit. Generally many vinyl windows that have two coats of the Low E coating (with argon gas) will qualify. Two coats of Low E is very common and is an excellent performer. However, there are some types and brands of vinyl ...

Re: Another tax credit for 2010?
No. Or at least, not that I'm aware of. As far as I know the tax credit is still applicable for 2009 and 2010 combined . I have not heard of any change to the time frame, nor have I heard that one can claim the $1,500 credit twice - once in 2009 and once in 2010. If you've used up all of the $1,500 ...

Re: Old house windows
You have lots of decisions to make. There are two main ways to replace the windows: a full tear-out replacement (the old window frame as well as the sash are replaced) or a "retrofit" replacement system (the old frame, sill, trim, stays in place, and a retrofit frame goes into the old fram...

Re: aesthetic & funtional question
Everyone has a different view of what they find aesthetically pleasing, but for what it's worth I would say that staying with sliders would look best for the 48x36 size, and for the 36x36 sizes take your pick of either double hungs or sliders (my preference would be double hungs). For part II of you...
