Guy, you are absolutely amazing.

Window owners........
Let Guy look at your windows, let him decide if it is too far out of the way or too expensive. What have you to lose? He would be the perfect expert witness if you want to apply any legal pressure.

Good post Cheryl. The screens are the main reason I went with Pella. If you are really unhappy with your screens, remember there are some great aftermarket options for inside retractable screens (e.g. Phantom Screens).

Thanks everyone! I was hoping you would say its ok, the difference in price between "stock" and "custom" sizes is pretty big. My home is 25 years old so hopefully things are stable

For the installers on the board, R.O. question

I'm about to order a couple of Marvin gliders, they have a frame size of 3' 11 1/2" wide. My rough opening is 4' 0". Marvin asks for a R.O. of 4' 0 1/2" for this window. Everything seems level and square in the R.O. Do you think I'll have any trouble without that extra 1/2" in wi...

There is probably some reason......weight and strength come to mind. You might have to go with some combo like an awning topped by a fixed unit to get your height. In my house I have two double hungs on either side of the slider, and they are one or two inches shorter. However you never see this sin...

It seems to me the hinges of a heavy french door would demand screwing into adjacent studs for strength. Thats probably why you don't see a french door hanging from an adjacent casement window frame. Maybe if you had one that hinges from the center you could do it, but you'll still have to have a st...

Re: reply

All I can think of is to have the new units installed more towards the exterior of the wall. You can have the installer do a bumpout around the opening on the exterior with 1x or 2x to support the frame and remove the exterior stops to replace the units leaving all the interior trim in tact. This w...

Yes I have Pella casement windows with the wood-trimmed Rolscreens. I stained and polyurethaned the veneer wood trim of the Rolscreens to match the rest of the interior wood. They have been bullet proof so far, no problems whatsoever. Yes they are on the inside, but this is an advantage since they s...

Once you have retractable screens its hard to go back to regular ones. I love my Rolscreens! Clear views but the screen is there when you need to open the window. Highly recommended.

Re: Lowes vs. HomeDepot

Before I am blasted, I am new to the replacement window scene and am just trying to find unbiased information. I am wondering if anyone can tell me which of the "lower end" windows that Lowes (Thermastar by Pella and Relibuilt) or HomeDepot (American Craftsman) is better. My interest is t...

Thanks for checking out my post RC OOPs sorry I was paraphrasing. The man said the form he was filling out (so that he could get my quote from the factory) asked if I wanted 1 1/4" bevel. Should he check none or yes? I don't even know what a 1 1/4" bevel has to do with a french door. The ...

Thank you Guy for your reply. I know you said that visible appearance can play a factor but can the loss of insulation also play a factor? My windows are the old metal casement windows that have storm windows added over them. They do sit at the very edge because they are so thin, making my window s...
