Solar Low-e SB70XL

#1 Post by cardinalfan »

Have looked at Pella, Renewal by Andersen (very expensive), Certainteed, Vinylmax and SoftLite Elements. I am leaning towards the SoftLite Elements even though they aren't cheap. They're about $720 per window (4 are 24x72 and 2 are 48x72). I forgot to get the price for the SB70XL coating. What would a reasonable price be for that upgrade and is it recommended for west facing windows with no shade in the St. Louis area?

I just priced out the same glass option for my brother's Soft-Lite windows as he lives in Dallas. Unless you're getting way too much unwanted heat coming through those openings, I'm not sure if Solarban 70 is needed? If so, it could run about an additional $15 to $45 extra per window.

St. Louis is a 3:1 heating to cooling degree days. Solarban 70 is not really applicable in this case. Standard Low-e will cut the amount of radiant heat by more than 2X as a standard.

Thanks for saving me a few dollars by skipping an option that I don't need in St. Louis. I did get a quote for the Bainbridge (with super spacers) that was 10% less than the Elements. Now I'm wondering if I should save myself $430 and just go with the Bainbridge or is the Element line worth the extra money?

Elements is worth the extra $$$, SB70 is not. Excellent choice. :)

Go with the Elements and the standard (i.e. non SB 70) low-e.

The Elements is easily worth the extra money.

Thanks. Your replies made me more comfortable with my final selection of the Elements. I think I'll even ask about adding four more windows on the other side.

Good choice.

Keep us posted on the progress and let us know how it turns out and looks.
